Mangoes are a delicacy relished across the world but did you know how did it arrive to India? It was brought from South Asian countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar. Today there are more than 100 varieties of mangoes produced in different parts of South Asia and India is one of the major producers. With growing prevalence of different forms of illness there are certain food restrictions laid down which may seem challenging for the patients. One such restriction is that laid on mango consumption. Especially in conditions like chronic kidney disease, when the fear is of rise in potassium level in the blood due to mango. Following are certain important tips to keep in mind as suggested by our renal dietitian – Dr Rachana Jasani:

1.Avoid mango in pulp form: To make pulps you may need larger quantities of mango, hence it is preferable to use mango in chopped form rather than pulp form.

2. Avoid mangoes with large meals: Especially if you are a diabetic, avoid eating mangoes with lunch or dinner. This is because you can end up having high post meals blood sugar if you eat this fruit with large meals as it does contain more carbohydrates. Hence, prefer mango or mango recipes as a mid meal. 3. Focus on portion control: Avoid mangoes in larger quantity. Stick to the amount recommended by your renal dietitian

4. Prefer medium potassium mangoes: As there are several varieties of mangoes, not all may have equal amount of potassium. Hence, stick to varieties that contain moderate amount of potassium over varieties that contain larger amount of potassium.
